WHAT TO WATCH FOR:
I didn’t get a chance to do a post match of the Europa game vs Benfica but needless to say it was disappointing. Less disappointing for me about the loss itself than the playing of some guys who just don’t need to play, which has been a theme so far for Amorim.
We get more of that today with Estupiñan starting again at LWB and even Saelemaekers at LAM. Throw in a double pivot of Modrić and Rabiot, a combination that DID NOT work the last time Amorim tried it, and these selections are starting to get old.
If this season is thought of as year 1, then why keep throwing out guys who haven’t played well since arriving at Milan? I get maybe trying a guy who has the characteristics you might want in a position, like Chukwueze at RWB since you want switches of play and the RWB to have good 1:1 skills, but most of the other selections have just been bad.
Amorim alluded to wanting to save Moreira in case he needs a spark in a tie game in the 60th minute. How about you go for the throat before that and then protect a lead late? If Amorim fails at Milan, this will be why. It won’t be because of the vertical/high pressing nature he likes to implement, it’ll be because he square-pegged/round-holed guys into a formation and philosophy. He wasn’t and hasn’t been clear sighted enough to pick the best fits available for it or adaptive enough to veer away from his preferred formation/philosophy and play what best suited the team until he was able to build the squad he needed for his preferred formation/philosophy.
Maybe today will be different. I fear it’ll be more of the same.
