Hey all, AviA here. I know Its been a while, I feel like I’m at a stage in my life where I only get to meet up with old friends at a wedding or a funeral. Well, here we are….sigh.
World's Best Defender
Baresi, the worlds best defender, Milan legend and honorary President has sadly passed and with it, a genuine part of footballing royalty and history I feel is now gone forever.
At the risk of being self centred and slightly melodramatic, I feel like a part of my love for the sport has also been laid to rest. The game has changed and so has the sport and at the risk of sounding like Grandpa Simpson, things just felt better back in the day but don’t just take my word for it…
After exchanging shirts with Baresi following a Napoli–Milan match in 1989, Maradona reportedly said:
“This shirt belongs to a magnificent player. I think Franco Baresi is the greatest defender. This is a memento I will cherish for the rest of my life.”
Meeting Greatness
I got to meet Baresi twice and he signed a shirt for me and just like Maradona, it’s something I’ll cherish for the rest of my days.
